Exhibit Details

Choose Your Anthem

Choose Your Anthem – choose a song that represents your coming out experience or your experience of being an LGBTQ quilter, and create a quilt reflective of that experience.

Quilt Detail

  • We are looking for Equilateral Triangle quilts ... 30" per side.
  • Quilts should be oriented so that the top is a flat side.
  • Standard sleeves will need to be attached.

Target Artists

The target artists are any quilter who self-identifies as a member of the LGBTQ community.

We are committed to reaching the diversity of the LGBTQ community, and want representation from as many groups as possible.

Due to overwhelming demand in the face of recent events, particularly in the Quilting Community,  we have realized that limiting the exhibit jut to members of the LGBTQ community would exclude a number of our strong supporters. For this reason, we would also like to invite 'Allies' to join the exhibit.

  • While we do not believe in censorship, we must understand that interested and committed quilt shows have raised concern over content. Specifically, the interested shows have specified 'no pornography' and that they must retain final choice of quilts. We believe that this is fair and reasonable given the nature of the quilting demographic.
  • We are also intent on marketing the exhibit to Pride Organizations, Galleries, Museums, etc, in which case, the restrictions attached by the quilt shows may not apply.
  • No copyrighted material may be incorporated into your design.
  • While we want the pieces to be inspired by your Pride Anthem, for copyright reasons, lyrics may not be incorporated into your piece without the explicit permission of the copyright holder. If lyrics are an integral part of your design, please contact us about how to go about getting permission.

Symbology and Thematics

As we have been developing this project, it's become apparent that many are unaware of many aspects of LGBTQ society. One of the foci of the special exhibit will be a series of quilts explaining various aspects of being LGBTQ in society.

  • Safe Spaces Many do no understand the role of the nightclub as a Safe Space, a place where LGBTQ can be themselves.
  • Pink Triangle and Pride Colors The history of the Pink Triangle and it's transition from the horrors of the Holocaust into a symbol of Pride is an integral aspect of the special exhibit.
  • Anonymity While there are many Out quilters, there is a huge history of anonymity. To this day, many people are required to mask their identities for their own safety. We plan to incorporate this as a broad thematic in the exhibit - from the use of initials as opposed to names, to the use of masks in photos and such.
  • Allies The LGBTQ community would not be where it is if it were not for the role of Allies.
